We are a NYC-based free sailing collective

Who We Are

Free Sailing School (FSS) is exactly what it says it is—a free catamaran sailing collective based in NYC. We are an inclusive group of environmentalist sailors—experts, wanna-bees and everyone in between who share the same desire to get on the water.

Our Mission

We are looking for free or barter for labor beachable sailboats within sailing distance of NYC. We teach our members how to fix, maintain, and sail any small sailboats that is given us.  All our boats either get used regularly or are given to people that will use them regularly. 

Our Vision

We aim to help everybody have access to sail in NYC—for free! We want to make sailing a non-elitist sport. We share skills, help each other, and strategize together on how to sail in NYC with no or little money.

Activities

PROJECTS WE DO

Ground School

We offer a seminar once a month for newcomers to learn the basic of sailing and to get to know our collective.

Practical Training

Follow up the ground school learning with our on-boat practical training to get know and practice with our salvaged sailboats!

Weekly Sailing

Members meet up weekly and sail together. The more everybody practices, the more we would get better at it.

Boat Maintenance

Members learn all the nitty gritty of a sailboat and help the collective in the overall upkeeping of the sailboats!

Monthly Meeting

Get to know all the members of the collective! Discuss existing issues and new ideas.
