First Practical Training

Free Sailing School put together their first on-boat training day with a group of newbies! It was successful despite Christian being the only experienced trainer. The day started early and Christian took out a group of two newbies at one time. As the day went on, some of participants went ahead and took one of the free Hobies and went sailing on their own. With basic knowledge, it is possible to just go for the trial-and-error method in learning how to sail the hobie cats. Winds were manageable on that day and the bay in general is fairly safe. And worse comes to worst, you’d either get stuck or just end up in the water, both of which isn’t too bad if you know how to swim.

A few participants did end up spending a couple of hours in the Flushing Bay water during the capsizing training. Ryan and Elys took the Hobie 14 out and purposely capsized it with full inversion. As they were having trouble righting the boat, Christian sent Laura and Nancy to help out. After a lot of struggle, the group finally was able to revert the boat back up and sailed back. Unfortunately the training wasn’t captured on camera.

Overall, Free Sailing School had introduced about 20 people to the world of sailing this time around. We’re hoping to do more similar trainings on a monthly basis going forward!
